Southern Hemisphere Remote Hosting – Interest Survey

Why Sutherland & the Karoo?

The Sutherland region of South Africa sits on the Great Karoo’s high, semi‑arid plateau. Skies are famously clear for much of the year, humidity is low, and light pollution is minimal thanks to vast open landscapes and small, scattered towns. The area’s altitude and stable winter nights deliver excellent transparency and seeing, making it home to the South African Astronomical Observatory’s SALT facility. These conditions are ideal for long‑exposure astrophotography, remote telescopes, and time‑series projects that benefit from Southern Hemisphere targets (e.g., the Magellanic Clouds, the Galactic Centre for longer periods, and southern globular clusters).
